Notes on temperatures the properties:
At cold storage temperatures the properties of this water-based solution might temporarily change (e.g. higher viscosity, cloudiness). If stored at cold temperature, the product should be brought to room or body temperature before use. The solution for intramuscular injection is to be visually inspected prior to use and only clear solutions free from particles should be used.
Notes on handling the vial:
The vial is for single or multi-use. The content of a vial is to be injected intramuscularly after drawing up into the syringe and warming up. After removal of the plastic cap (A) do not remove the metal ring (B) or the crimp cap (C).
Store at room temperature, 15° – 30°C (59° – 86°F).
Avoid freezing and cool temperatures below 15°(59°F).
If freezing occurs water can enlarge and brake the vial.
Bacteriostatic Water (bacteriostatic water for injection) is sterile water containing 0.33% metacresol as a preservative is used to dilute or dissolve medications; the container can be reentered multiple times (usually by a sterile needle) and the metacresol suppresses or stops the growth of most potentially contaminating bacteria. The Bacteriostatic Water can be used in diluting drugs that can subsequently be administered by intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injection. There are few side effects of Bacteriostatic Water, if any, in adults and if they occur, it they may be related to contamination, particulate matter or the drug that is being dissolved.
Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is supplied in a multiple-dose 10-30 mL glass flip off vial that is glass and not pressurized. It is not used for neonatal medications because of possible blood pressure changes and toxicity of metacresol. If Bacteriostatic Water is injected intravenously without any diluted compound, it may cause some red blood cell lysis because it is not isotonic. Bacteriostatic Water usually does not interact with other drugs; however, some drugs for injection may be incompatible. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before receiving Bacteriostatic Water. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
